Would you like to try growing your own food?

We know that a full-sized plot is a big commitment and, depending how much time you have, it can be a lot of work. This is one of the reasons that we decided to test out a slightly different way of food growing on the allotment.

We now have a number of raised beds available so that – if you want to just have a go at food growing within a community, but without a huge time or money commitment – you can rent one (or more) of the raised beds, instead of taking on a full, or half, plot.

The raised beds are filled with coir-based compost and, until rented, they are sown with green manure to increase soil fertility. Before you start growing, the green manure can be dug in to boost the organic matter in the bed. The beds are just over a metre square – so are also perfect for trying out square-metre gardening!

Do get in touch if you are interested in having a go. The annual rent is £8 per raised bed. Tenants also pay a £5 yearly Allotments Association membership fee and a returnable key deposit of £25.
