Rainwater Collection #2

This morning’s working party connected new guttering and downpipe to the shed on Plot 23 to collect rainwater running off the roof.

On Plot 12, which has no buildings from which to harvest rainwater, we rigged up a tarpaulin between the boundary fence and a fence post on the plot, facing the prevailing wind/rain. We hope this will collect and channel rain into two barrels that we daisy-chained together with an overflow pipe.

We’re going to see how effective the tarpaulin is – we will replace it with something a bit more rigid if necessary. One of the barrels had a pipe rusted through it – we managed to remove the pipe, drill the hole a bit bigger and insert a plastic tap. So that the tap can be used to fill a watering can, we needed to raise the barrel up off the ground – luckily we found some solid fence posts to do this job.

We also put a hole in a upturned spare lid to help channel the water it collects into the barrel below (right hand picture).

Thanks to Nolice, Reet, Gerard and Janet for working on this today!

Next rainwater collection working party will be Sunday morning. If you are able to join us, please message via the site whatsapp. Thanks!
